Medicated Assisted Treatment

Methadone & Suboxone

We offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) using both Methadone and Suboxone to support recovery from opioid use disorder. Our licensed clinical team works with you to find the right medication and dosing plan for your individual needs.

About each Medication

Methadone

Methadone is a long-acting opioid agonist that works by binding to the same receptors in the brain as other opioids — reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms without producing a high when taken as prescribed. It has been used safely and effectively for opioid use disorder treatment for over 50 years. Methadone must be dispensed daily at a licensed clinic.

Suboxone

Suboxone is a combination of buprenorphine and naloxone. Buprenorphine is a partial opioid agonist that reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms, while naloxone discourages misuse. Suboxone has a "ceiling effect," meaning it has a lower risk of overdose compared to full agonists like methadone. It can be prescribed by a certified provider and taken at home.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The right medication depends on your history, lifestyle, and clinical needs. Our clinicians will work with you during your evaluation to make the best recommendation. Here are some general guidelines:

What works best for you?

    • Have a long or heavy history of opioid use

    • Have not responded well to Suboxone in the past

    • Need a higher level of daily structure and accountability

    • Are more comfortable with in-clinic dosing

    • Need stronger craving suppression

    • Have moderate opioid dependence

    • Want more flexibility with take-home doses

    • Have a busy schedule with work or family

    • Want a lower overdose risk profile

Switching Between Medications?

We facilitate medication switches

If you decide, or your clinician recommends, switching from Methadone to Suboxone or vice versa, Drexel will manage the transition for you. Switching between medications requires careful timing and clinical oversight, and our team is experienced in making that process as safe and comfortable as possible.
